The Old Ruins in Barcelona, Sorsogon - Century old ruins, the silent witness of the past

Across the Barcelona Church is now a park, it was the place of the Presidencia Building and the school for the Spaniards. The old structures are still there. They are more than century old ruins.

The Ruins

Presidencia building was the seat of the Spanish government, governed by the gobernadorcillo. During Spanish regime it was the fortress, because of strategic location facing the Pacific Ocean, pirates, moro and intruders could be easily seen. This building has a tunnel as a retreat passage but the priests closed it to avoid thieves from accessing to the religious relics.

The park has a light house and wifi internet connection, which makes this park popular to the locals. It's refreshing to sit and rest after touring the place. Since it is facing the ocean, the smell of the breeze is perfect for the tired body.

If these structures could only tell the history, they would be the perfect witness to tell us the account of the past.

St. Joseph Parish Church or commonly known as Barcelona Church

St. Joseph Parish Church of Barcelona, Sorsogon was built in the year 1874 by Franciscan friars. It is also known as Barcelona Church. The church is made of coral stones, lime,  beaten egg whites mixed with tuba, a local wine coming from coconut trees.  Barcelona church is one of the oldest churches in the Bicol Region. There are repairs done but most part of it are original. It is also one of the most photographed old churches in the region.

Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave-Cotmon, Camalig, Albay

Our family loves to travel and explore a place, that’s why every time we see opportunity we always include side trips. One of our recent trips was in Hoyop-hoyopan Cave, which is located in Barangay Cotmon, Camalig, Albay.

The name of the cave was derived from the word Hoyop which means blow or blowing of air/wind. The air can freely pass though inside the cave. There are many entrances and exits, these passage ways will test your skill in squeezing and kneeling to get through the other chambers. Although in my case I didn’t have any problem passing through, lol I am petite that’s my advantage. One of the opening will lead the tourist to the stunning view of the Mayon Volcano, but sad to say we didn’t see it because it was cloudy and raining at that time.

Inside the cave, there are beautiful and stunning formations of stalagmites and stalactites, like dinosaur, angel and a lot more. A pond and a dance floor can be found inside it too. The dance floor is still being used during fiesta.
the Dance Floor

Fruit bats and other living organisms are can be found. There are still jars inside the cave were dated from 200 BD too 900 AD, some of these artifacts are now in National museum and Camalig ChurchAccording to a Franciscan priest and archaelogist, Fr. Cantius Kobak, the cave is as old as 3000BC to 4000BC.

Fruit Bats

It withstood the test of time, been one of the witnesses of our colorful past, served as sanctuary during difficult times and even up to now it does to the local specially on strong typhoons hitting the place.
Dinosaur formation

Hoyop-hoyopan cave has an approximately 32 square meters of land area. The path way now is concrete different from the last time I was there and there are bulbs serve as the light instead of the flash lights that we used before. It is being maintained now by a clan, Soriano, Nieva and Nuylan Families. The tour fee was 500.00 pesos for eleven persons as payment for the lights and tour. Parking fee is 25.00 pesos. Outside the cave there are native souvenirs that can be bought. We bought hats as souvenirs.

The opening where the Mayon volcano supposedly can be seen clearly during Sunny days

The opening where one person can pass through at a time

Hoyop-hoyopan cave is definitely a place worth to visit.

The Chocolate Hills of Legaspi City

I was in the first flight to Legaspi City. And after the clouds greeted me with so much joy, they disappeared when the plane was about to land and the scattered hills, which looked like chocolate hills, showed and gave me more excitements in taking pictures till the Majestic Mayon Volcano showed up. It was a breathtaking scene. As if I was welcomed wholeheartedly. Great experience.

Cotton Like Clouds

Align CenterWhile on board in an airplane to Legaspi City, I was too bored when suddenly I looked outside the window and these clouds greeted me with a smile and joy. They're the ones who let me forget the boredness and the excitement of going home. As the plane was flying they followed us as if they're playing with me. They let me feel blessed and happy while they were entertaining me with this beautiful view.

Clouds are running after me...

As If they were dancing before my eyes

St. Michael Archangel Parish Church-Irosin, Sorsogon

Touring the Philippines will always include the visitation to different Churches. One will see how the Christianity influenced the lives of the Filipinos. Even the smallest communities have chapel.

Photobucket

Atop a hill at the poblacion of Irosin, Sorsogon is the St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church. Parishioners have to climb the 74 steps to worship in this scenic, breezy and spacious church. This church has different ways to reach. Aside from the stairs that you can see in the pictures, on the sides there are narrow stairs, and an asphalt road for vehicles.

On this hill is another smaller hill, called Little Baguio, where the Grotto of Virgin Mary located.

From this church you can have a clearer view of Bulusan Volcano but when I was there it was covered by clouds so I wasn’t able to take a picture.

In 1876, the Parish of San Miguel was officially recognized with Father Mariano Miranda as its parish priest. Town fiesta, in honor of San Miguel, was celebrated every 29th of September.
