Ati-atihan Festival 2011

It’s the mardi gras of the Philippines, one of the grandiose, beautiful and spectacular festivals in the country. The festival originated when Atis, native, black, kinky haired, short people asked food or help from the lowland people every time they gave help the Atis would dance. To honor the Atis those people from the lowland would paint their faces with black paints. Ati-atihan means make believe to be Ati. When the Spaniards came, the Sto. Nino was incorporated, that’s why now adays one can see people dance while the images of the infant Jesus are on their hands. There are other celebrations in the country similar to this festival.
